Friday’s win over the Cougars was the catalyst the Eagles needed.

The Eagles started their season 1-2, after losing 38-6 to Oakland,  31-17 to Summit and bringing home the win 28-23 over Centennial.  After going 29-1 over the past two seasons, the Eagles are looking very unlike themselves, but Friday’s win will get the train back on the tracks.

Senior wide receiver Jackson Twaddle explains, “We have some problems meshing as a unit. We really need to buy into what the coaches are saying, and continue to get better every day.”

Normally a very high scoring offense, the Eagles have averaged a meager 17 points per game , very unlike the teams spread-styled offense. “We have all the talent in the world, but none of that matters if we can’t be mentally tough and move together as a unit,” Twaddle said.

The Independence defense has faltered as well, allowing over 30 points per contest. Normally a punishing unit that knows how to stop plays before they can even start, the D has been unlike themselves, but look ready to bounce back soon.

Last Friday, however, the Eagles took their first win of the season over Centennial. After going up 21-0 in the first quarter, Centennial returned a blocked punt for a touchdown, then forced three fumbles and a safety to make the score 21-16. The Eagles drove down the field right before halftime to go up 28-16, until Centennial responded in the third quarter to make it 28-23.

The rest of the game was a defensive shootout until the final buzzer sounded

Senior Running Back, Troy Henderson, accounted for 142 all purpose yards and three touchdowns, leading the Eagles to their first victory.

Even as the team struggles on the field, they continue to be confident off the field. “We realize that it’s a long season, and we’re just getting into region play, and we are hungry to get better,”  says Twaddle.
