There’s no question to whether Indy wins awards for sports. From the beginning of the year to the end, trophies are hoisted.

Now, thanks to the hard work of our administrators, academics can raise trophies as well. This past Thursday, Indy threw the very first “academic pep-rally,” celebrating the accomplishments of students from all walks of life.

Some award winners include John Lane, Molly Cahill and Ethan Valk. Valk was accepted to the US Naval academy. John Lane placed first in Best Videographer and Best reporter at the Tennessee High School Press Association Awards, and Cahill won $7,500 in the ArtEffect Project competition.

Cahill’s artwork was recognized by Sonia Lowman, who flew out from Santa Monica, California.

“Being recognized in front of the whole school was pretty amazing,” Lane said. “I’ve been recognized before, but it wasn’t brought into the light until now. It felt like all of my hard work had paid off.”

A memorable part of the pep-rally was when Kurt Jones introduced senior Tristan Teague.

“In my eyes, Tristan is Mr. IHS,” Jones explained. “He exemplifies exactly what we teach here at Independence.”

This pep-rally showed the students that there’s plenty in pride throughout our school.
